the factors leading to gun violence from newtown, connecticut to the streets of cities like chicago, where the homicide rate spiked earlier this year -- more than 500 gun murders in the past year, and behind closed doors in cases of domestic violence, we're joined by goldie taylor. she lost both her brother and father to gun violence. she is an msnbc contributor and managing editor of the goldie taylor project lead she recently wrote a piece titled, "after my father and brother were murdered, owning a gun made me feel secure. now it's time to give it up." and she did just that on monday. goldie taylor, welcome to "democracy now!" let's go back. how you ended up getting your gun. tell us your life story. >> i grew up with guns. it was a part of our life. we grew up in east st. louis. having a gun was part of the family security along with having burglar bars and those kinds of things. when my father was murdered in 1973, my mother immediately bought a gun and kept it in the house for all of our lives. my brother was murdered in a similar fashion about 20 years later. it really took the fami

minute. nearly two years, it was city's fleeing. now it is palestinians coming from the refugee camp where fighting has forced thousands of people to move. the refugees have no specific place to go to. this camp is one of three refugee camps where the palestinians coming from syria are being received. up to 550 families have arrived in the past few days. we had to go from house to house looking for them. most are staying with relatives. this person and his 12-member family. two of his daughters were awarded an attack in july. -- they were wounded in attack in july. >> we fled from our house as fast as we could, escaping through the window because the door was being hit by shells. i was worried for my children and women. there was constant shelling around us. that was the only way to save our lives. >> the u.n. agency responsible for helping the refugees is starting to distribute aid. but the u.n. and others will probably find it more difficult the psychological impact on these refugees. some volunteers are giving it a try. all refugees are vulnerable. this is their second exodus. fam

for hours for the chance to make that exchange in oakland and san francisco. the guns the city has collected will be cross referenced with a database to make sure they were not used in any crime. and then those guns will be melted down and turned into less deadly things like park benches and signposts. i bet if anybody needed plowshares, they could make those too. those weapons in california were collected by the police, but the buyback part was funded by nonprofit groups, including $100,000 donation from a guy who runs a medical marijuana dispensary. and apparently that's a good way to make a lot of money. in brooklyn, new york this weekend, people went to trade guns for debit cards at two different locations. the program was run by the police and the brooklyn district attorney's office. more than 130 guns were turned in in exchange for up to $200 a gun. in evanston, illinois, north of chicago, there was a gun buyback program this weekend at a church organize bade community activist whose son was shot and killed in evanston last month. the police collected 26 handguns, 15 rifles, four shotg
